Goji's 'Master' Molecules

Many of the health-giving properties of the goji (Lycium barbarum) are today being confirmed and validated in modern scientific studies from major universities around the world.

The unique polysaccharides of the goji (LBP-1, LBP-2, LBP-3, and LBP-4) function as directors and carriers of the instructions that cells use to communicate with each other.

Consequently, they are of enormous value to the smooth functioning of virtually every cell in the human body.

These delicious Tibetan Lycium fruits have been traditionally used in Mongolia and Tibet for centuries and regular consumption of the berries is believed to lead to a long, vigorous and happy life. In Tibet and Mongolia this red berry is cherished by the locals, they honor it with celebrations and festivities that last for two weeks every year. They live free of arthritis, cancer, diabetes and many other common diseases and their life expectancies are well over a hundred. It has been used for centuries in Tibet and throughout the Himalayas and there is no known risk of continual use only benefits.

Tibetan Goji's are wonderful and delicious tonic fruits used as a blood tonic, to nurture the heart, they have been used to relieve heart palpitation, insomnia, forgetfulness and anxiety associated with blood and chi deficiency. The berries have a high content of iron, about 20 times that of grapes and 15 times that of spinach. Many Tibetan formulas include these berries with other ingredients and offered in a well built formula with tonic herbs, astringent herbs, herbs to strengthen essence, nourish internal organs and build blood.

Tibetan Goji berry is now undergoing intense scrutiny around the world as a cancer drug. These berries can kill many kinds of cancer cells in vitro and contains 124 ppm of organic Germanium. Germanium has been demonstrated to have anti-cancer activity. Japanese studies indicate that organic Germanium is effective in treating liver cancer, lung cancer, uterine cancer, cervical cancer, and testicular cancer when combined with other drugs. Germanium possesses the power to take over the hydrogen ion from cancer cells. Losing hydrogen ions can cause depression and even death to cancer cells.

Besides Germanium, these berries have other components that act against cancer. These other components appear to be able to depress or block the synthesis of the cancer cells DNA, which interferes with the cell's ability to divide and thus lowers the reproductive capacity of the cancer cells.

The Tibetan Goji berry has been tested as an anti-obesity drug. Patients were given 30 grams each morning and each afternoon, made into a tea. Results were excellent. most patients lost significant weight. The berry contain polysaccharides which have been demonstrated to strongly fortify the immune system. they are also very rich in vitamin C and B vitamins. Furthermore, it is the richest source of carotenoids, including beta carotene, of all known plants on earth and is thus a powerful antioxidant. It is believed to fortify the system against disease and to provide the energy to overcome difficult health obstacles.

Modern chemical analysis and clinical study finds Tibetan Goji berry to protect liver function, replenishes vital essences, improves visual acuity, lowers blood pressure and cholesterol, strengthens muscles and bones, burns fat, brings energy to the heart and works as an aid to treat diabetes and impotence. It contains a high concentration of the branched chain amino acid L-Leucine among 18 amino acids, 21 trace minerals, linoleic acid, thiamine, riboflavin, betaine, more beta carotene than carrots and 500 times more vitamin e by weight than oranges. It's loaded with Vitamins Bl, 82. B6 and vitamin E. It has been found affective in increasing white blood cells, protecting the liver and relieving hypertension.

This berry not only contains superoxide dismutase, phenylpropaniods, anti cancer inhibiting factors and anti senility factors, but it also has a high concentration of the branched-chain amino acid L-Leucine. This amino acid forms the building block of a very unique compound called HMB (Beta-hydroxy-beta-methylbutyrate) through the phenylpropabiod activity, this berry converts leucine into HMB. HMB lowers total and LDL cholesterol levels in blood and helps strengthen the immune system while building muscle tissue and burning body fat.

In a large study done in Japan with older patients this tasty little red berry was found to inhibit tumor growth by 58% and the protein of the berry displays an insulin like action that is affective in fat decomposition. It also strengthens immunoglobulin A levels, an increase in these levels suggests that this berry may enable injured DNA to better repair itself and ward off tissue degeneration. As we grow older the levels of lipid peroxide in our blood increase, while levels of health protecting antioxidants like superoxide dismutae (500) decrease.

Another study of people who consumed consistent doses of Goji berry found SOD in the blood increased by a remarkable 48%, hemoglobin increased by 12% and lipid peroxide levels dropped by an amazing 65%. The people of Inner Mongolia who eat this berry live free of arthritis, cancer and diabetes with life expectancies well over one hundred years. In a study conducted by the Scientific Commission of Mongolia on cancer patients, Tibetan Goji berry triggered an increase in Lymphocyte transformation and white blood cell count (measure of immune function) and to cause the blood of older people to revert to a younger state.

The Lycium berries also increases phagocytosiss and the titer of serum antibodies (another index of immune function), unhealthy levels of these antibodies have long been associated with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome also known as Epstein Barr.

How do you use Goji berries? It is easy to enjoy this berry, just eat them, add them to hot and cold cereal, porridge, grains, casseroles, stews, baked goods and trail type mixes for snacking throughout the day for added stamina and delight. About a half kilo per month is an average amount to use that will support immune strength and vitality.

In 2500 years there is no reported discomfort from continual use, only benefits. It is said in Tibet that eating a handful of these berries a day will make one happy for the entire day. Such a practice has a cumulative effect. Eventually, you can't stop smiling!

Pomegranate

For centuries, the pomegranate has been valued as a symbol of health. Could the legends have some basis in fact? In 1998, research began in an effort to get some answers.

A number of top scientists in their fields, including a Nobel Laureate, are researching areas covering antioxidant activity, cardiovascular disease, circulation, cancer and others. To date, multiple pilot, peer-reviewed studies have been completed and published, while a number of others are still in progress.

There are antioxidants and then there are antioxidants. Pomegranates are loaded with phytochemical antioxidants called polyphenols. The polyphenols in pomegranates include anthocyanins and tannins, which are among the most potent plant antioxidants around.

Antioxidants are important because they help neutralize oxidants, also known as free radicals. Free radicals are everywhere. Our bodies produce them as part of normal metabolism but there are also many external sources such as: air pollution, alcohol, pesticides, sunlight, tobacco smoke, drugs and even fried foods. Emerging science suggests free radicals can interfere with the body's functioning, and may produce damage that can accumulate over time.

With incredibly high levels of naturally occurring antioxidants,  Pomegranate is truly the Antioxidant Superpower. Pomegranate contains a higher level of polyphenol antioxidants than red wine, green tea, cranberry cocktail juice and blueberry juice.

Green Tea Extract EGCG

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is one of four major catechins in green tea. Catechins belong to the flavan-3-ol class of flavonoids. Green tea catechins are the flavan-3-ols found in green tea leaves. All catechins including EGCG are polyphenolic substances. Black tea leaves have a much lower content of these catechins. That's because black tea leaves undergo extensive fermentation, during which the majority of the catechins are enzymatically oxidized to the major pigments of black tea leaves, theaflavin and thearubigen.

Green tea catechins, especially EGCG, make up approximately thirty percent of the dry weight of green tea leaves. Of the catechins, EGCG is the most abundant one in green tea leaves. Green tea has and continues to be a popular beverage in the Orient (especially in China and Japan). In this region, it is thought to have a number of health-promoting benefits, and it is used in the management of various disorders. Clinical studies suggest that green tea may have cancer chemo preventive, as well as anti-atherogenic properties.

The catechins in green tea are responsible for the purported health benefits of the plant. These catechins are antioxidants, with EGCG appearing to be the most power antioxidant of all the green tea catechins.

Here are just a few known health benefits of drinking green tea:

  • Boosts your immune system
  • Lowers blood sugar
  • Helps prevent cavities and tooth decay
  • Slows the aging process
  • Helps reduce the risk of cancer
  • Lowers cholesterol
  • Aids in weight loss by burning calories
  • Reduces high blood pressure
  • Prevents arthritis
  • Reduces the risk of heart disease
  • Reduces the risk of stroke
  • Lowers the risk of blood clot

Proanthocyanidins are a class of flavonoids responsible for the red to blue/purple colors of most berries, cherries, grapes and some flowers. These compounds are capable of increasing intracellular levels of vitamin C, improving capillary stability, quenching free radicals, inhibiting the destruction of collagen, inactivating microbial enzymes used to spread infection, blocking microbial adhesion to cells, and normalizing mucopolysaccharide synthesis in the ground substance between cells.
